Upbrook House was granted planning permission under paragraph 79e) of the National Planning Policy Framework. This required the design to be of exceptional quality in that it:

  • “is truly outstanding or innovative, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help to raise standards more generally in rural areas; and

  • would significantly enhance its immediate setting, and be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area.”

The house was designed to create an accessible dwelling, using innovative approaches, but making them integrated into the design of the home, rather than an afterthought. So many alternatives in the open market only offered unattractive bolt-on additions to assist disabled living, impacting the sense of home

The house will provide an exceptional and innovative single storey dwelling which incorporates affordable inclusive design solutions that can be used as a case study for others locally and nationally to follow, and thereby help raise the standards of architecture.

In accordance with the approved learning methods and procedures, this website has been set up to share lessons throughout the course of the project and help to create a legacy of the research, study and consultations with accessibility experts that have informed and created this innovative design.
